Batman is a superhero film directed by Tim Burton and stars Micheal Keaton as the super hero Batman and Jack Nicolson as his arch nemesis The Joker. This first of many Batman movies introduces Batman’s rise to power as the dark knight of a city in desperate need of a hero against a masked menace (jack Nicolson) The Joker.

Billionaire Bruce Wayne, as a child, witnesses his parents murdered in a dark ally of Gotham’s crime infested city and vows that he will use all his resources to prevent anymore injustice to his home city. As an adult, he is Billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne but by night, he is a dark avenger whom the press calls ‘Batman’. Batman takes on the responsibility to hunt down crime boss ‘The Joker’ whose previous encounter with Batman left him falling into a large vat of chemicals which left his skin bleached white, lips red as the sun and a permanent grin.
Many actors were considered to play the role of Batman but Micheal Keaton beats out A list actors such as Mel Gibson, Kevin Costner, Bill Murrey, Peirce Brosnan, and Charlie Sheen. Keatons role as Batman as one of the long list of Batman in the Batman Movies caused a controversy amongst Batman Comic Book fans which lead to over 50,000 angry letters sent the to Warner Bros. Keaton goes on to play the role of Batman and portrays the comic book character as the dark avenger that he should be which won fans over when the cloud clears. Jack Nicolson Also won the role over actors such asTim Currey, Willem Dafoe, David bowie Robin Williams, and James Woods even though he was already favored to play the joker back in 1980.

Batman opened on June 23, 1989, grossing $43.6 million in 2,194 theaters on its opening weekend. This first Batman in the many Batman movies broke the opening weekend record, set by Ghostbusters II one week earlier, with $29.4 million. Batman would eventually gross $251.2 million in North America and $160.15 million internationally, totaling $411.35 million. Batman was the first movie to earn $100 million in its first 10 days of release, and was the highest grossing movie based on a comic book, until 2008′s Batman Movies Batman: Dark Knight.
